Motorhome C1 Licence Checker

Can you drive your motorhome on your current licence? Answer a few quick questions for general guidance.

The licence category you need depends mainly on your motorhome's maximum permitted weight and the entitlements recorded on your driving licence. Use this checker as a starting point, then verify your entitlement with DVLA.

01

What is your motorhome's MAM? ?

Look at the vehicle's weight plate or handbook. The figure may also be described as MTPLM in motorhome specifications.

02

How is the motorhome powered?

Special rules can apply to certain qualifying zero-emission vehicles.

03

When did you pass your UK car test?

Many drivers who passed before 1 January 1997 received additional entitlement. Your current licence is what matters, so this date alone cannot confirm what you can drive.

04

What higher vehicle entitlement is on your current licence? ?

Check your photocard or official DVLA driving record. If you don't know which categories you have, choose "I'm not sure".

05

Are you aged 70 or over?

Higher-category entitlements may have separate renewal requirements at age 70.

06

Will you tow a trailer over 750kg MAM? ?

Towing a heavier trailer may require additional entitlement, depending on your vehicle and trailer combination.

Motorhome licence terms explained

Click the question-mark icons in the checker to jump to the relevant explanation below.

MAM — Maximum Authorised Mass

The maximum permitted weight of your motorhome when fully loaded, including passengers, luggage, water and equipment. It is the figure used to determine the relevant licence category, not simply the motorhome's weight when empty.

MTPLM — Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass

A term commonly used in motorhome specifications for the maximum permitted laden weight. Check your vehicle's plate and documentation to confirm the relevant figure.

Category B — Standard car licence

The standard car category. It generally covers vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM, subject to the licence rules and any restrictions. Special rules may apply to certain qualifying zero-emission vehicles.

Category C1

A licence category generally used for vehicles over 3,500kg and up to 7,500kg MAM. Your entitlement must be valid and may have expiry dates, medical requirements or other restrictions.

Category C

A licence category for larger vehicles over 3,500kg MAM, including vehicles over 7,500kg. It is different from Category C1.

Licence entitlement

The vehicle categories you are legally permitted to drive, as shown on your driving licence record. Having passed a car test on a particular date does not, by itself, confirm that a higher category remains valid today.

Category C1E — C1 vehicle with a heavier trailer

This category can cover a C1 vehicle towing a trailer over 750kg MAM, subject to the applicable combined weight limits and the entitlement recorded on your licence. Other trailer categories can apply to different combinations.
