Abacus Motorhomes
August 10, 2026
If you're thinking about buying a motorhome or campervan, it's worth looking beyond the purchase price and considering the ongoing costs of ownership.
One of those costs is motorhome road tax, officially known as Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).
The good news is that motorhome tax is relatively straightforward once you know the vehicle's revenue weight (maximum or gross vehicle weight) and, for lighter vehicles, its engine size.
So, how much is motorhome road tax in 2026/27?
For the 2026/27 tax year, motorhome road tax depends on the vehicle's revenue weight (maximum or gross vehicle weight) and, for vehicles up to 3,500kg, the engine size.
The current annual rates are:
|
Motorhome |
Annual road tax |
|
Up to 3,500kg – engine up to 1,549cc |
£230 |
|
Up to 3,500kg – engine over 1,549cc |
£375 |
|
Over 3,500kg – any engine size |
£177 |
These are the current rates published by the UK Government.
Many motorhomes and campervans are designed with a maximum weight of 3,500kg.
For these vehicles, the engine size determines the road tax. If the engine is over 1,549cc, the current rate is £375 per year.
Interestingly, motorhomes over 3,500kg currently have a lower flat rate of £177 per year, regardless of engine size.
Of course, road tax shouldn't be the only consideration when choosing between different motorhomes. Heavier vehicles can have different driving licence, payload and insurance requirements, so it's important to look at the bigger picture.
If you're new to motorhomes, you may come across several different weight terms.
For vehicle tax purposes, revenue weight refers to the vehicle's maximum or gross vehicle weight. You may also see MTPLM (Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass) in motorhome specifications.
This is the maximum permitted weight of the fully loaded vehicle, including passengers, luggage, water, gas and other equipment.
It's important to check the vehicle's payload too, particularly if you're planning to travel with lots of equipment or several passengers.
